Svavar Guðnason Art Museum, 2023, Hornafjörður

In the year 1912 Ásgrímur Jónsson came by ship to Hornafjörður and spent one month living in a tent up on a hill. The year before he had stayed with Helgi Arason at Fagurhólsmýri and painted Öræfajökul and it´s surroundings.

In the year 2023 Almar Atlason came driving on a Grand Cherokee jeep to Höfn, spent one month in a tent up on a hill. On the way back he stayed with Eva Bjarnadóttir at Fagurhólsmýri and painted Öræfajökul and it´s surroundings.

More than 111 years had passed since Hornafjörður had been painted in oil and watercolours for the first time.

Crawling Glaciers, The painting to the left is by Hlynur Pálmason but the other two are by Almar Stein Atlason. A few pieces were borrowed by the museum to put the exhibition into context with Hornafjörðurs rich history of painting.
